Question: I recently started Bikram Yoga. After years of running and strength training I find myself like a 2x4. Anyway the issue I am having is that no matter how hard I try I am unable to sit back on my feet. My hips simply will not go there. Of course I can not reach my feet and there is one pose where you sit on the floor right leg bent with the left leg over top and I am supposed to reach over with my left arm and grab my foot. I can't even reach over to the floor. How can I get my hips to move? ( I do have a silly long legs and a short torso which I am sure is not helping)

You should look into using a foam roller in order to help you start to gain some more mobility in your hips. You can see the Foam Roller video in the training zone on the Perform Better website and look at the Mike Boyle "Foam Roller Techniques" video as well. Runner are notoriously tight, so it is not too surprising to hear the issue that you are having. I hope this is helpful and please do not hesitate to call us directly if you have any other questions.

I second Kevin's recommendation. I purchased a few foam rollers (cut one up) and some basic instructional material. I use the rollers after cycling and lifting. Not only is the soreness quickly dissipated, flexibility and recovery are much improved. Don't let the initial "Ouch!" of the foam roller turn you off. Your body quickly adjusts, and the rollers get softer. I think!

Cheers,

Greg
